Later

I'm trying to imagine Lazarus,
the day he walked out of the
tomb in his death robes,
stinking rotten and feeling
his lungs go back to work,
his heart, back to work,
the bloodrush and the
sweet daylight and that voice,
calling: his own name
hammering in his ears.

I'm thinking of him that night
after the party was over,
laying there with the wife
and the quilts piled up
and the fire gone to coals.

I bet she never held him
so tightly, so tenderly.

How could they have not
made love that night?
The body gone cold, now
flushed with living and
loving again.

Did she remember, that night,
just for a moment,
her husband without the breath,
remember him as corpse
as she stared into that face,
laced her fingers with his?
Did she shudder?
Did he notice, know her thoughts?

Afterwards in the long silence,
their breathing measured
and together again in that
late hour, he confessed:

"I don't want to sleep tonight."

"Tell me a story," she said.

Now that's cool. I like that. I'm glad I'm not the only one that enjoys speculating.

By the way, why is no one else commenting on here? Is there some unspoken law I don't know about? The eleventh commandment: "Thou shalt not comment on Michael's blogs." I wonder what Dave and Josiah could preach on that one.

Yeah, I sometimes wish I had a bit less imagination...

Not many folks read this blog -- I use it to keep and revise drafts of some new poems, and I'll point someone to it once in a while.

That's funny that you mention the idea of an 11th commandment -- have you seen Evan Almighty? I watched that earlier this week, and at the end of the movie "God" (played by Morgan Freeman) proposes an 11th commandment: 'Thou shalt do the dance.' It's pretty funny. I may bring that up in Sonship this week...

Then forgive me. I am intruding. Perhaps I should read silently.

No, I haven't seen Evan Almighty, but if it's going to be part of Sonship, I guess I'd better do my homework. :)

No worries --- you're not intruding at all Debi. This is a public blog, after all! There just aren't many comments cause not many people read it and fewer have something to say -- that's all : )

I'm actually glad for the feedback and even more glad that someone else enjoys my scratchings or finds something interesting to chew on there. More and more I hope that I write poetry for other people to enjoy more than for myself.

Evan Almighty is fun -- and worth talking about a bit. See you Sunday!
